Refining the Classification of the US Nonprofit Sector

Over 1.7 million tax-exempt and nonprofit organizations in the US work tirelessly to help mitigate our urgent social issues. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses The National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities Core Codes (NTEE-CC) Classification System to classify these organizations.

While the NTEE system provides a standardized way to understand the nonprofit sector in the US, the taxonomy does not accurately reflect the current priorities of stakeholders, such as climate change and social justice.
