Responsible Consumption and Production in the US
By 2030, UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, aims to promote sustainable natural resource use, energy efficiency, responsible waste management, and a better quality of life for all. This includes addressing a wide range of challenges from food waste, trash and recycling, to managing toxic waste and landfills.
In 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the goal to reduce food loss and waste by half by 2030, in alignment with SDG 12. Currently, between 30 and 40% of the US food supply is wasted every year while 35 million people are experiencing food insecurity and hunger.
Sustainable Consumption and Production is about doing more and better with less – the use of services and products that meet basic needs and improve quality of life while minimizing the use of natural resources and toxic materials, as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants. The US has both a production and consumption problem when it comes to food, and also lacks the proper infrastructure to properly recycle many materials at scale. An average of 5 pounds of trash is created per person each day in the US (totaling 290 millions tons per year), 50% of which ends up in landfills. Food waste makes up the largest percentage (24%) of waste in landfills, followed by plastic (18%), and paper (12%).
