Eliminating Disinfectant Water Contamination
Disinfectants and disinfection byproducts contain known carcinogens which enter drinking water and otherwise should-be-clean water across the U.S. Though this category of pollutants should be protected by the 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act, in 2015 alone, there were 11,311 reported violations at community water systems serving more than 25 million people. Formal enforcement measures were taken in only 12.4 percent of all cases and 23.0 percent of health-based cases.
Exposure to Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproduct contaminants can lead to cancer and may be linked to reproductive impacts such as miscarriages and birth defects.
