Encouraging Male Partner Engagement in Family Planning Conversations

Maternal health outreach and engagement is a common goal of mobile health projects for development. Male partners of pregnant and postpartum women are known to be important influences on their health behavior, yet are often left out of the conversation or care plan.

Nature and Context

The use of SMS for information access and dissemination has been well documented in Global Health fields. However, most of the work on maternal health has focused on reaching pregnant women at clinics or at home through community health workers. Systems that reach out directly to mothers are increasingly common. Studies suggest that reaching out to male partners during prenatal care and about family planning decision making may improve outcomes, but few interventions have included them.
