Nature and Context

Data Human trafficking, the narcotics trade and weapons smuggling all feed conflict, instability and repression worldwide. It is estimated that nearly 21 million people are enslaved in forced labour and trafficking situations across the world today, and the industry generates at least $32 billion of illicit profits every year. The Human Trafficking Hotline Network is developed in partnership with Google and aims to create a network of support to help find and support trafficking victims. When someone calls the hotline, the operator can use online resources and tools to find their location and nearby law enforcement or health care support. The hotline is in its early stages, but has already assisted in helping around 8,000 victims of human trafficking.

Symptoms and Causes

Assessing the full scope of human trafficking is difficult because so cases so often go undetected, something the United Nations refers to as “the hidden figure of crime.” By using the hotline, it will enable the operator to locate and assist the victim.
