Translating sign language into text or speech
Across all age groups, in the United States, approximately 1,000,000 people (0.38% of the population, or 3.8 per 1,000) over 5 years of age are "functionally deaf;" more than half are over 65 years of age. Despite the number effected, American Sign Language is quite uncommon in our culture, with only approximately 250,000-500,000 Americans using and understanding it.

Nature and Context help
While ASL is becoming more common in our education system there is still a major disparity in learning and community for those who are deaf. Even with ASL, if one party doesn't understand, deaf citizens must rely on written or translated communication. Translators are not always readily available, an inclusivity issue in our culture. Tech that monitors ASL movement and then translates verbally could help deaf and non deaf people communicate more efficiently.

Ideas Description help
Talk is a translation service for sign language. Its gloves are embedded with sensors that translate the gestures of sign language into text on a smartphone. The text is then spoken aloud so that those who don’t use sign can understand speech and hearing-impaired people.
