Compost faces tough competition as fertilizer

There are 5,000 composting facilities nationwide, yet it is a highly fragmented market, with only 500 facilities accepting food scraps. It is difficult for compost to compete on price with synthetic fertilizer, which benefits from cheap oil and large production economies of scale. Food waste also requires additional carbon sources to reach an optimal mix necessary for healthy compost piles.
