The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2017 that 55 million people in the U.S. are “gig workers”. This accounts for approximately 34 percent of the U.S. workforce, projected to increase to 43 percent in 2020. This is a huge portion of the workforce, looking for flexible but consistent work. Striking a balance with willing workers who are able to work for a couple hours at a time, or as needed by businesses who can provide them with temporary work could help reduce unemployment rates.
