Recruiting staff on a just-in-time, needs basis

With the advent of gig work, the workforce has evolved yet again to fulfill the needs of society. Part time, needs based jobs are becoming more common, and employers outside the hospitality and service industries should be taking advantage of at will, just-in-time employees and volunteers.

Nature and Context

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2017 that 55 million people in the U.S. are “gig workers”. This accounts for approximately 34 percent of the U.S. workforce, projected to increase to 43 percent in 2020. This is a huge portion of the workforce, looking for flexible but consistent work. Striking a balance with willing workers who are able to work for a couple hours at a time, or as needed by businesses who can provide them with temporary work could help reduce unemployment rates.
