Using Big Weather Data to Help Coffee Farmers

In recent years, increasingly extreme and unpredictable climate patterns have devastated smallholder agriculture, which in turn affects the whole value chain. Humidity is wiping out harvesting opportunities, and the increasingly high demand for coffee is not being met. Farmers need to be provided with climate data so they can prepare for drastic changes in weather and farm accordingly.

Nature and Context

In recent years, increasingly extreme and unpredictable climate patterns have devastated smallholder agriculture, which in turn affects the whole value chain. For example, temperature rises and increased humidity have resulted in fungus outbreaks which drastically diminished harvest sizes. At the same time, it is anticipated that by 2050, the demand for coffee will double, while the area of land suitable for coffee cultivation will halve. It is important to provide farmers with the key information needed to adapt to climate change. Tropical agriculture specific weather stations (NEXOs) monitor conditions on-farm, which could be analyzed and turned into actionable climate smart adaptation information.

Ideas Description

Working with the Union Hand-Roasted Coffee Company, and with support from the UK's Technology Strategy Board and the European Space Agency, Weathersafe has developed a set of sophisticated mapping and monitoring services for the coffee industry. With applications tailored for government agencies, co-operatives and individual farmers, their aim is to allow everyone involved to access and respond to a whole range of relevant data, such as pest infestations or the maturity of the current crop.
