Providing tech resources for researches in polar regions
Satellite observations provide scientists with information on some of the most inaccessible regions on Earth. Without this data we would have a very unclear picture of how our rapidly changing environment is affecting glaciers around the world. Technology is rapidly expanding and these new developments have never been more important to climate action in polar regions than they are right now.
A Polar Thematic Exploitation Platform (Polar TEP) is being developed for the European Space Agency (ESA). Polar TEP will provide polar researchers with access to computing resources, earth observation (EO) and other data, and software tools in the cloud. This new approach will remove the need to transfer large EO data sets around the world, while increasing the analytical power available to researchers and operational service providers. EO is especially important in the polar regions at a time when climate change is having a profound impact. Developing tools to model, understand and monitor these changes is vitally important in order to better predict and mitigate the resulting global economic and environmental consequences.
