On weekday mornings, Neftaly Gonzalez hops off his electric cargo bike to pick up food from a Dig Inn location, a fast-casual restaurant, in Manhattan’s Financial District. A manager lets the 28-year-old courier inside and hands him large aluminum trays of prepared food, refrigerated from the night before.

New App Seeks to Reduce Food Insecurity in Cities

Transfernation, a New York City non-profit, recently launched an app to help reduce hunger in America’s urban centers. As the first tech-based, on-demand food redistribution system in the city, Transfernation diverts 1.5-2.7 metric tons of food per week from landfills and distributes it to local homeless shelters, church feeding programs, and soup kitchens.

Out-of-the-box solutions take on food insecurity

When Diego Gerena-Quiñones zips through the afternoon traffic in Midtown Manhattan on his cargo bike, it looks like he could be delivering shoes or office supplies. But his load is much more indispensable. Everyday, he and others at his cargo bike company make numerous pickups for Transfernation, a nonprofit that arranges for corporate cafeterias and restaurants to donate uneaten food.

We’re headed towards a societal and environmental catastrophe, especially in cities. We currently pick up between 1.8-2.26 metric tons a week from corporate cafeterias and offices. For me, these trash bags of food piled high on sidewalks represent the absence of a system.
